ATSENTI AUARATA

Destination Pont Rouge! I meet Helen and her friend Marc. Helen is a hell of a woman who embarked on herbalism for about 14 years. Her drive is unbelievable, she moves all the time, but also takes the time to talk with her woofers. Other than herbalism, she works a little off in order to support her project.

On her land she organized a garden as Nouvelle France garden and an Amerindian type of garden. The rest of the ground is a little wood, among whom one can find a small hut cobbled together by the woofers.

The type of New France garden has square plots, formerly the gardens were made higher up to avoid the deer and other animals come to feast. At Helene' place, these gardens support vegetables, plants, some aromatics and also some nettle or other plants like marigold of whic orange and yellow flowers are edible.

In this garden grow mainly flowers and medicinal plants, one can find there valerian, marshmallows plants (whose roots are very useful to our dear toddlers, chewing the sweet root of this plant allows them to soften their gums and help teething), mullein for respiratory system, different types of chamomile, the soothing catnip, hypericum, peppermint, plantain, ..

All photos are not from Helene garden because we were in autumn and there were no more flowers. Click on pictures for links and more information.

During my stay I was able to apply the various stages of work for a herbalist, because Helen is careful that her woofers can learn some tasks about this job. So we raise flowers and plants, dry them, either in the attic or dryer for conservation. Finally duringrainy days, we prepare herbal tea bags, which also allowed us to know the properties of some plants!

Autumn came, it took us, Helen, Cecile, another woofer, and I tidy up the garden. Between sized plants, picking the last flowers, transplant plants that spend the winter inside, we had a great time in the garden.
I let you discover all this picture!

Concerning the Amerindian garden, it is circular and divided into quarter. And each of them represents a quarter of the 4 elements, 4 seasons, 4 stages in the evolution of human life and all oriented into the cardinal points. Amerindian also used animals to represent the stages of maturity of man, what I remember is that for the wisdom they draw a polar bear and cardinal point is matching the north.
